Maneki-neko, also known as Manekineko (Japanese: 招き猫; literally “inviting cat,” German: “beckoning cat” or “beckoning cat”), is a popular Japanese lucky charm and talisman in the form of an upright cat beckoning the viewer with its right or left paw.
A classic porcelain Maneki-neko figurine.
Maneki-neko are particularly popular today in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Thailand and are often placed in the entrances of shops, shopping malls, restaurants, brothels, and lotteries. There, they are said to attract customers with their constant waving. In marketplaces and exhibitions, they are said to bring financial and business luck. They are often placed in private homes to bring prosperity and ward off bad luck. Their current form originates from the Japanese Bobtail cat breed. According to Japanese tradition, the Maneki-neko is the reincarnation of the goddess of mercy, Kannon (観音). Legends and anecdotes about lucky cats have been handed down in Japan since around the beginning of the Edo period (1603–1867). The historical precursor to the Maneki-neko was a cat figurine called Marushime-neko. Today, the Maneki-neko is so popular that its figure has found its way into comics, manga, and animated series, and appears as a mascot in company labels and trademarks.
