This is an approximately 6 month old kitten living on Long Island, NY that had access to the outdoors. The hole that you’re seeing in the neck is the wound created by a bot fly larva (cuterebra) that dug its way under the skin. Cats and other small mammals tend to pick up these larvae when they brush up against the entrances to other small animal burrows where the flies lay their eggs.
